Services

The Village Care Services recognise that support is not a “one size fits all” solution and work collaboratively with clients, caregivers and/or other stakeholders to create a schedule of supports that meets the specific needs. We have particular interest and experience with the following services.

Daily Living and Social Supports

The Village Care Services’ daily living supports is a generalised service to assist clients with every day needs ranging from in-home support with afternoon routine to support with social and recreational programs in the community. Support Workers will work with the clients to identify interests and hobbies but also within the village network to identify relevant community programs and activities to ensure variety and meaningful engagement. Our Senior Support workers are skilled at providing this type of support to families where a parent, a child or both have complex needs.

Independent Living Skills

The Village Care Services’ living skills program is designed to support young people from 15 to 21 from initial capacity assessment, goal-setting and skills development whilst living at home/with carers, all the way to post-transition support.

The initial capacity assessment and goal setting is conducted with the young person but input from caregivers and other stakeholders is encouraged. This ensures a 360 degree view of strengths and needs across areas including (but not limited to) informal support systems, financial preparedness, cooking and nutrition. Realistic SMART goals are set in-line with the particular client’s needs and wishes and then together the client and support worker get to work.

When the time comes, The Village Care Services will be there every step of the way to support the client into new living arrangements and provide ongoing support and check-ins from a familiar face.

Regular re-evaluations are completed throughout to ensure progress is on track and goals remain current and realistic.

Support for Clients with Complex Behaviours

The Village Care Services’ Senior Support workers have experience working with young people with high-risk behaviours stemming from disability and/or trauma experiences. These staff are committed to providing therapeutic interventions to ensure these young people do not miss out on the opportunity to engage in social and community activities, receive the daily living support required and to provide an often-needed break for primary caregivers.

Psychosocial Recovery Coaching

The Village Care Services work with individuals with a psychosocial disability to understand and conceptualise what recovery looks like for them. The Recovery Coach will use their mental health knowledge and relationship with the participant and those closest to them to help map out a realistic plan to get there. This will include working towards creating a sustainable support system, acceptance of the episodic nature of ill mental health and fostering hope and providing opportunities for small successes along the way.

Theory

  • Trauma and attachment – our policy and program is informed by our understanding of the roles of trauma and attachment in child development. Bruce Perry’s Neurosequential model of brain development, Mary Ainsworth’s attachment theory, The Adverse Childhood Experiences Study and Stephen Porges polyvagal theory are just a few of our favourites. We further recognise the ongoing impacts of inter-generational trauma on our Aboriginal people and are committed to culturally safe practices guided by our Aboriginal clients, their families and community representatives.

  • Positive Behaviour Support – We recognise behaviour is a result of the interaction between individual and environment and that there are no inherently “bad kids.” We combine a functional behaviour approach with understanding of child development, including any delay or disability, along with recognition of the impact of trauma on emotional regulation.

  • The Human Rights Model – We value diversity within our community, recognise people with disability as experts in their own lives and are committed to working with them and other stakeholders to remove barriers impacting community participation and quality of life

Values & Beliefs

The Village Care Services values are central to work we do and underpin all services and policy.

  • Social Justice / Equity – We believe that every child deserves the same opportunities in life to set them up for future health and happiness. We also recognise that children with disability, adverse childhood experiences or facing other barriers often need a great deal of additional support in order to achieve the same outcomes as the majority of their peers.

  • Family – Professionals, friends and other supports come and go but for most of us, regardless of how imperfect they are, it is our family that will be there in the end. This goes for our client’s as well, even for those living in out-of-home care.

  • Empathy – we work on the assumption that everyone is doing the best they can with what they know and the capacity they have in the moment. We need to understand first so we can support second and teach third.
